app fatigue
With the advancement of technology and the growing popularity of apps, it can’t be denied that the market is saturated with millions of apps – over 2 million in the App Store and nearly 3 million in Google Play. When even the stores are experiencing app fatigue, you know we’ve got challenges.
Yep, “there’s an app for that” has never been more true – or annoying – yet how do you find the productivity tool you’re looking for through the noise? This is a question many businesses are asking themselves. So what is App Fatigue? How can we address app fatigue so it doesn’t affect net profit?

What Is App Fatigue?

App fatigue, in it’s simplest definition, is the stress and anxiety felt by employees due to the multitude of apps they need to use in order to perform their jobs. Although the intention of using these apps is to make your employees’ lives “easier,” there are some aspects that shouldn’t be overlooked.
Although the amount of apps available in the market is overwhelming, most of these apps are just duplicates of superior versions. Consumers are bombarded with notifications and marketing pitches, many of which are copycats offering little value , unable to deliver on the promise to improve user experience.
Another issue – each app is a cog in the productivity machine, specializing to a very specific problem, and we all know businesses don’t only have one problem at hand. Enterprises are often paralyzed by the sheer number of productivity challenges. Does this mean they need to install hundreds of specialty apps to patch together a workable solution?
By the time that employees are able to get to their meaningful work, they might have already used half of their daily working hours, which means instead of increasing their productivity, they are now subject to stress and anxiety of finishing their needed output in less time. And we all know how these scenarios can turn out – either the quality of the output is compromised, or the quantity declines. Even worse, employee turnover can increase due to these daily stresses, and the cost of retraining new staff goes on and on. And this is just the beginning. We haven’t even taken into account the other opportunity costs that this scenario brings to your company. Cue the data silos...

Data Silos Created from Using Different Apps

Using various apps means storing and moving data in different platforms. Since all the apps being used in a company cannot “talk” to each other and are not native to a single platform, there is no way to ensure a central storage for all of your documents. This simply means that the document you edited using one app, could have a different version that a different department is editing using a different app. This makes it harder for organizations to ensure documents are updated and the information being used is correct. In most businesses however, using incorrect data can have massive ramifications both internally and externally, especially if data is being communicated over to their customers.
This is a very common problem as most of us use one app for storage (like Dropbox), one app for tracking documents (can be Google Sheet), another app for project management, email and Skype for communications, plus more. The list goes on and on, and management is forced to deal with all the confusion and mistakes being made on a daily basis.

How Does App Fatigue Affect Your Bottom Line?

The following result from the industry survey, The False Promise of the App Economy (commissioned by Harmon.ie) will provide you with a better perspective on how App Fatigue can affect your bottom line:
  • Typical workers use an average of nine (9) applications to get their basic work done. They around five (5) to nine apps (9) open at any one time. This can include project management, note-taking, data processing, document collaboration, communication, and storage apps. This means that a significant amount of the employees’ time is being spent setting these apps up, feeding data on these apps, and storing the output from each app.
  • 34% of the workers somewhat agree, that they need to between various apps in order to complete their tasks on a daily basis.
  • 41% of the respondents on the other hand totally agree that if they could view all the information from the different apps they are using, into a single window, it would be easier for them to focus on their work. This means that using too many apps breaks their momentum hence they take more time getting back on track and focusing on the task at hand.
  • 50% of the respondents say that they check their emails at least five times in an hour. Which again, takes time sorting out the spams from the important ones.
If all these unnecessary routes are eliminated by just using a single platform that can do everything, employees will have an extra one (1) to two (2) hours daily. Multiply this by the number of people you employ, multiplied by their hourly rate, x 30 days – and you will see how much money you’ve been wasting, just because your employees need to use different apps for everything.

What Is the Trend for Apps?

Due to the massive amount of data that needs to be processed, the apps in demand today are those capable of automating processes, thus increasing the productivity of employees by 10x or more. Automation eliminates the need for employees to do a single, same process over and over again. Basically, automation allows you to set triggers and fulfill a set of task based on the rules set, when you set it to be performed, and for how long. So, with the right tool, you can increase your output ten times, without having to increase your staff.

Now We All Know What App Fatigue Is, What Is the Solution?

Perhaps a better phrase is, “there are a million apps for that!”
Yes, the root cause why there is app fatigue is because there isn’t just one app that can do all the things required in a typical workplace setting, there are hundreds – 918 to be exact (which is the average number of apps deployed across the Enterprise). If only there was a single platform employees can use for their needed storage, processing, and collaboration; perhaps at that point data silos could be eliminated and a huge amount of time could be saved.
